On January 22nd, a netizen posted a video claiming that there was an elevator accident in a shopping mall in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, resulting in one fatality.
The video posted by the netizen showed a 120 emergency ambulance parked at the entrance of a shopping mall, with a police cordon set up and a large crowd of onlookers gathered around.
According to mainland Chinese media reports, an informant revealed that the incident occurred at the Yunhui Commercial Plaza in Yong’an Township, Jingkai District of Jiujiang City. A young man was using the elevator to transport goods when a box suddenly fell, and in trying to catch it, his head got stuck in the elevator, rendering him immobile and gradually losing consciousness.
After the accident occurred around 4 p.m. on January 21st, bystanders immediately called for help upon witnessing the situation, and the young man was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
An eyewitness at the scene revealed that the victim was a 17-year-old boy who was working part-time at the mall during his winter break, and it was his first day on the job. The eyewitness also disclosed that the young man succumbed to his injuries due to their severity.
As of now, the relevant departments in Jiujiang City have not issued any official statements regarding the incident. However, staff at the Jiujiang City Funeral Parlor confirmed that the young man who was trapped in the elevator at Yunhui Commercial Plaza has passed away, and his body is being kept at the funeral parlor.
Public information shows that Yunhui Commercial Plaza is managed and operated by Jiujiang Yunhui Supermarket Chain Co., Ltd., which was established in June 2024. The mall is equipped with 8 direct elevators, 2 freight elevators, and 10 escalators.
The accident has sparked discussion online, with many netizens expressing sorrow over the young man’s death and raising concerns about the quality of the elevator. A netizen named “Ake Ake” also mentioned that they heard the young man’s “parents were still out of town” at the time of the incident.
