On February 10th, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Lai Ching-te emphasized the importance of unity in the face of threats from the Chinese Communist Party during a meeting with leaders of the five branches of government. He stressed that Taiwan must stand united to strengthen national defense, promote economic development, and align closely with the democratic camp to effectively respond to the changing landscape.
According to Article 44 of the Constitution of the Republic of China, the President has the authority to convene discussions among the leaders of different branches of government to resolve disputes. President Lai Ching-te invited the Premier of the Executive Yuan, Minister of the Legislative Yuan, acting President of the Judicial Yuan, acting President of the Examination Yuan, and the Vice President of the Control Yuan to discuss national affairs at the Presidential Office on February 10th.
In his address, President Lai Ching-te mentioned the upcoming Lantern Festival and used the traditional saying “家和萬事興” (harmony in the family brings prosperity) to express his wishes for peace and happiness in every household. He emphasized the importance of harmony within the country and unity among the different sectors of society for the prosperity and well-being of the nation.
President Lai Ching-te highlighted the global challenges posed by geopolitical shifts, industrial restructuring, and rapid advancements in technologies like artificial intelligence, emphasizing the need for Taiwan to stand united in the face of threats from the Chinese government. He stressed that unity is essential to enhance national defense, boost economic development, build societal resilience, and collaborate closely with the democratic camp to adapt to changing circumstances.
In response to the critical moment of transformation in the global political and economic landscape, President Lai Ching-te underscored the expectations of both the Taiwanese people and the international community for Taiwan to play a significant role in preserving regional peace and fostering global prosperity.
