Two Cold Air Masses to Hit Taiwan in the Coming Week
Taiwan is bracing for two waves of cold air masses in the upcoming week. Meteorological experts in Taiwan have stated that on the 14th, the northern region will experience slightly cooler temperatures due to the influence of a cold air mass from mainland China. On the 16th, another cold air mass from mainland China is expected to bring lower temperatures in the morning and evening across Taiwan, leading to significant day-and-night temperature differences.
Associate professor Wu Derong from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at National Central University in Taiwan highlighted in a column for the Meteorological Applications Promotion Foundation that the latest (as of 8 p.m. on the 12th) European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model simulation indicates that a frontal system carrying moisture from the South China Sea will bring widespread and noticeable rainfall today. Following the frontal system, the cold air mass from mainland China will move southward, causing a significant drop in temperatures with cooler conditions in the north and a cooler and damp climate in central and southern regions. People are advised to stay warm. The temperature ranges across different regions are expected to be 11-17 degrees Celsius in the north, 14-19 degrees Celsius in the central region, 16-21 degrees Celsius in the south, and 14-19 degrees Celsius in the east.
Wu Derong further explained that according to the latest European model simulation, on the 14th, the northern region will experience slightly cooler temperatures and the central and southern regions will have a cooler and damp climate due to the influence of the cold air mass from mainland China. Although the moisture from the South China Sea will gradually decrease, there is still a chance of localized brief showers in various areas. The 15th will see a brief respite with rising temperatures, but in the evening, another frontal system will pass through the northern seas, bringing a probability of localized brief showers to the northern coastal and northeastern areas.
Looking ahead, Wu Derong pointed out that the latest European model simulation indicates that on the 16th and 17th, another cold air mass from mainland China will lead to clear and stable weather in the western region while sporadic rainfall is possible in the eastern region. Temperatures will be lower in the morning and evening across the country with significant day-and-night temperature differences. On the 18th, moisture levels will slightly increase, potentially bringing localized brief showers to Greater Taipei and the eastern region, with cooler conditions in northern Taiwan and cooler mornings and evenings in central and southern regions. By the 19th, the cold air mass is expected to weaken, leading to improved weather conditions and a noticeable rise in temperatures. Given the rapid changes in weather systems towards the end of this period, close observation of model adjustments is recommended.
