Experts teach you the correct way to use a vacuum cleaner

Using a vacuum cleaner may seem simple, but many people make mistakes that result in decreased cleaning effectiveness. In response to this, experts from vacuum cleaner manufacturers have shared the correct ways to use a vacuum cleaner, hoping to help people improve their cleaning work.

According to a report from the “Lifehacker” website, Ketan Patel, a senior design manager at Dyson, a UK appliance manufacturer, provided several correct methods for using a vacuum cleaner:

Patel pointed out that moving the vacuum cleaner head too quickly is one of the most common mistakes people make. Dust is composed of various elements such as dust mites, allergens, bacteria, and viruses, which may hide deep in carpets. Vacuuming more slowly allows the vacuum cleaner enough time to truly suck out all the dirt. Dyson recommends moving the head at a speed of 20 inches (51 centimeters) per second.

When using a vacuum cleaner, you may move the head in a zigzag pattern, pushing forward first and then pulling back, then pushing forward again, repeating the process over and over. But Patel says that this method is incorrect.

He suggests vacuuming in each direction once. According to their research, passing the head multiple times in an area yields the best cleaning results.

He mentioned that you should move the head along a straight line from one wall to another, then return along the same path to clean any dirt you missed on the first pass. Once you return to the starting position, move the head over and start cleaning another path next to the first one, and repeat this process until all the surfaces in the room are cleaned.

Patel introduced which vacuum cleaner attachments can be used on different surfaces and for different needs:

– Multi-tool or standard heads can be used for thorough cleaning, especially on carpets.
– Torque drive heads are stronger and more powerful for removing dirt from floors, including deep-pile carpets.
– Velvety heads can clean hard floors and surfaces.
– Mini motorized heads can be used for cleaning stairs, cars, mattresses, or interior decorations.
– Long, rigid tubes placed at the end of a vacuum hose can be used for cleaning crevices or hard-to-reach areas.
– Soft dusting tools or small hoses with brush attachments are suitable for delicate furniture.

If your vacuum cleaner is very dirty, it may be difficult to achieve maximum cleaning effectiveness. As Patel said, “Proper maintenance is the key to ensuring the vacuum cleaner performs at its best.”

He stated that vacuum cleaners produced by companies like Dyson are designed to suck up tiny particles that accumulate over time in the filter. Therefore, you should wash the filter once a month to maintain maximum suction, and you should also clean your dustbin and wash your head and attachments.

He said if you’re unsure about what to do, consult the user manual for your specific vacuum cleaner.

If your vacuum cleaner starts to smell after using it for some time, it may be due to mold, pet hair and dander, excessive dust, or a burnt rubber belt. For more information on how to remove odors from your vacuum cleaner, click here.
