Experts: Taiwan Warm as Summer Today, Weather Changing to “Spring Chill with Rainfall on the 4th”

Taiwanese meteorologist Wu Derong said that the weather in Taiwan today (March 3) is warm like summer, but starting tomorrow (March 4), the weather will quickly change to “spring cold with showers.” People should pay attention to keeping warm.

In his column for the “Foundation for the Promotion of Meteorological Applications,” Wu Derong, an associate professor of atmospheric science at National Central University in Taiwan, pointed out that the latest (as of 8 p.m. on the 2nd) European (ECMWF) model simulation shows that Taiwan is still within a warm air mass today with increasing mid-to-high level clouds, resulting in partly cloudy skies throughout the island. There may be scattered light showers in the Hualien and Taitung regions, while mist may occur in the Kinmen and Matsu areas.

Wu Derong mentioned that today in Taiwan, daytime temperatures are “warm like summer,” with highs exceeding 30 degrees Celsius in all regions of the island. Expected temperature ranges across regions are 17 to 31 degrees Celsius in the north, 18 to 33 degrees Celsius in the central area, 19 to 33 degrees Celsius in the south, and 20 to 30 degrees Celsius in the east.

According to Wu Derong, the latest European model simulation indicates that tomorrow, as a frontal system passes through, there will be significant rainfall with a probability of localized convection (thunderstorms) developing in the northern to central region. With cold air moving southward, temperatures will drop suddenly, requiring special attention to the drastic temperature changes, known as “sudden warmth followed by cold” (daytime highs above 30 degrees, dropping to around 15 degrees overnight, a difference exceeding 15 degrees).

He further noted that from the 5th to the 9th in the early mornings, northern Taiwan will experience the greatest influence from cold air, with waves of moisture passing through, bringing rain, sometimes heavy, resulting in a particularly damp and cold feeling, forming a typical “spring cold with showers” pattern. Other regions will be less affected but will still experience noticeable changes in weather patterns that require adaptation.

Additionally, Wu Derong mentioned that a cold air mass will descend to its lowest point on the night of the 6th and early morning of the 7th, with Taipei’s temperature dropping to around 14 or 15 degrees Celsius. The probability of “northeasterly winds” will be slightly higher than that of “continental cold air masses,” but in some flatland areas, the lowest temperatures may still reach around 10 degrees Celsius, necessitating warm clothing. According to the latest European model simulation, starting from the 9th daytime, the influence of the cold air will weaken, and temperatures will rise, leading to improving weather conditions.

The Taiwan Central Weather Bureau forecasts that today will be sunny throughout the day with good weather in all regions, with high temperatures around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius in the northern and eastern parts, and 32 to 33 degrees Celsius in the central and southern regions, with slightly higher temperatures in mountainous areas. As cold air moves southward in the evening, temperatures will gradually become damp and cold, dropping to around 17 to 21 degrees Celsius. The temperatures on outlying islands for the entire day will be around 20 to 26 degrees Celsius in Penghu, 17 to 23 degrees Celsius in Kinmen, and 12 to 18 degrees Celsius in Matsu.
