Weather experts pointed out that Taiwan will have clear weather today (14th), with cold mornings and evenings. However, the weather is expected to change on the 15th, with a sudden drop in temperatures in the northern regions and a chance of snow above 3,000 meters high mountains.
Associate Professor Wu Derong from the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at Central Taiwan University mentioned on Sanli TV’s Weather Prediction program that the latest European model simulation (as of 8 p.m. on the 8th) shows clear and stable conditions throughout the island today. There will be significant warming during the day, but mornings and evenings will be cold, leading to a large temperature difference between day and night. People should pay attention to dressing appropriately. The temperature ranges for different regions are: 8 to 24 degrees Celsius in the northern region, 9 to 26 degrees Celsius in the central region, 10 to 27 degrees Celsius in the southern region, and 8 to 24 degrees Celsius in the eastern region.
Wu Derong further mentioned that according to the latest European model simulation, on the 15th, a frontal rain band will bring strong cold air moving southward, causing brief localized rain in the northern and eastern regions. At the same time, moisture will move into the southern areas, leading to a chance of brief rain in mountainous areas. There is also a probability of snow above 3,000 meters high mountains. Temperatures in northern Taiwan will drop suddenly, becoming colder and wetter as the night progresses.
He added that from the 16th to the 17th, strong cold air will envelop Taiwan, leading to the lowest temperatures. During the daytime on the 16th, it will gradually become dry with partly cloudy skies in the western region, while the eastern region might experience occasional brief rain. From the 18th to the 20th, the cold air will gradually weaken, and temperatures will rise daily. Mornings and evenings will still be relatively low due to “radiative cooling.” Expect mostly clear skies with some clouds and a chance of scattered showers in the eastern region.
Wu Derong also mentioned that according to the latest European model simulation, this current wave of strong cold air is likely to reach the probability of a “continental cold air mass.” However, whether it will intensify due to nighttime radiative cooling requires close observation. In some flat areas, the lowest temperature will still drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Industries such as agriculture, fisheries, and aquaculture should pay attention to adjustments in the Meteorological Bureau’s “low-temperature special report” and take precautions against the cold. People should also ensure they stay warm to maintain good health.
