The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) announced that a bipartisan delegation of European Parliament members will be visiting Taiwan from the 24th to the 28th of February. The delegation is set to meet with Vice President Lai Ching-te, marking the first European parliamentary visit to Taiwan this year.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China highlighted that the delegation, led by Ivars Ījabs, Vice-Chair of the Group of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament, has been warmly welcomed. Members of the delegation include European Parliament members such as Hannes Heide from Austria (Socialists and Democrats Group), Arkadiusz Mularczyk from Poland (European Conservatives and Reformists Group), Vladimir Prebilič from Slovenia (The Greens/European Free Alliance), and policy adviser Kārlis Ralfs Lapiņš under the leadership of Ivars Ījabs.
During their visit, the delegation is scheduled to meet with Vice President Lai Ching-te, attend a banquet hosted by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Wu Chih-chung, and engage in in-depth discussions with officials from the Legislative Yuan, government agencies, representatives from civil society organizations, and think tanks on various issues including Taiwan’s political and economic development, Taiwan-EU economic and trade relations, geopolitics, and technological innovation to explore opportunities for cooperation.
The European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET) recently passed a resolution on the Annual Implementation Report on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) on January 30th. The report includes clauses supporting peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, opposing any unilateral actions seeking to alter the status quo by force, condemning China’s continual distortion of UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, and calling on the European Union to assist in enhancing Taiwan’s security resilience among other provisions advocating for Taiwan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China sincerely appreciates the European Parliament’s ongoing support for Taiwan through concrete actions. The government looks forward to further collaboration with European partners who share similar values, aiming to strengthen democratic resilience and establish a solid network of mutual values alliance.
