Etiquette Expert: Avoid These No-Go Behaviors When Claiming Luggage at the Airport

After the plane lands at its destination, most passengers will go to collect their luggage, which can be considered the final step of the entire journey. However, factors such as large crowds and long waiting times can lead to impolite behaviors and even disputes. Etiquette experts have provided some advice regarding these behaviors.

According to a report by The Huffington Post, Jodi R.R. Smith, the General Manager of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting in the United States, pointed out that after a long flight, airplane passengers are tired, dehydrated, and under pressure, yet they must patiently wait for their luggage to appear.

Smith and other etiquette experts shared the most common impolite behaviors people exhibit when retrieving their luggage and offered suggestions on how to avoid these mistakes.

Many people tend to crowd around the luggage carousel, making it difficult for others to retrieve their belongings. Smith urges people to step back to allow space for others to approach and collect their luggage.

Jackie Vernon-Thompson, founder of the From the Inside-Out School of Etiquette, advises, “If you don’t see your luggage, step aside so others can retrieve theirs, creating space for yourself.”

Vernon-Thompson reminds people not to rush to the conveyor belt or push through the crowd as soon as they grab their luggage. Even in crowded areas, it’s important to be considerate of others when navigating through the crowd.

She says, “Don’t be rude, be patient and attentive. Treat fellow passengers with kindness.”

Diane Gottsman, author of “Modern Etiquette for a Better Life” and founder of The Protocol School of Texas, points out that many suitcases look identical, so it’s crucial to check the luggage tag before taking it off the conveyor belt to ensure it’s yours.

Vernon-Thompson suggests attaching a scarf, ribbon, or something distinctive to your luggage, making it easier to spot when it comes around the carousel.

She says, “If you accidentally take someone else’s luggage, immediately place it back on the carousel to continue moving. I’m sure its owner is nearby, waiting for it.”

Gottsman advises caution when taking luggage off the conveyor belt to avoid causing harm to others with careless handling.

Gottsman says, “Once you retrieve your luggage, move to the side rather than engaging in conversation with friends while they wait for their luggage.”

Vernon-Thompson emphasizes offering quick assistance if you see elderly or disabled individuals struggling to retrieve their luggage. Don’t just stand by and ignore their difficulties.

Smith warns, “Do not allow your children or pets to sit, stand, or play on the carousel. Regardless of how tired you may feel at the end of the journey, do not let them run wild at the baggage claim area.”

Just like in any other public area, it’s important to consider those around you at the baggage claim area.

Vernon-Thompson advises, “Avoid speaking loudly, including using your phone’s speakerphone. Do not let everyone be affected by your conversation.”

She adds, “Do not express anger or frustration if your luggage did not arrive with the flight. Luggage delays can happen due to human error.”

While the inconvenience of missing luggage can be frustrating and understandable, Vernon-Thompson stresses that other passengers should not be impacted by your anger and behavior.

She says, “Respect the staff who assist you in locating your luggage. They will ensure you receive your belongings.”
