Elderly Woman in Shenyang Allegedly Deceived into Spending 470,000 at Health Store

In Liaoning, Shenyang, an elderly man in his seventies spent 470,000 yuan at a health store in the year leading up to his death. It wasn’t until after his passing that his daughter discovered this when going through his belongings. The family expressed that their mother suffered from cognitive impairment, questioning how she could have spent so much money if she wasn’t being deceived.

According to a report by The Paper on March 16, the daughter of the elderly man, Ms. Liu, revealed that her mother, Ms. Li, passed away on the afternoon of February 19, 2025. Subsequently, Ms. Liu found that her mother’s deposit slips were missing, and in the place where the slips were kept, she found three receipts from a store called Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center (also known as Yuanyang Beauty Health Club).

During the arrangements for her mother’s funeral, Ms. Liu came across a report about Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center, leading her to suspect that her mother might have also fallen victim to a similar “scam”.

The report that Ms. Liu saw regarding Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center (published by JiantNews on February 24) stated: “Cupping costs 2980 yuan per session, brain age treatment costs 9800 yuan per session, neck lymphatic detox costs 9800 yuan per session… At the Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center in Tiexi, a 73-year-old man named Xu spent a total of 158,100 yuan on various treatments after a week. Ms. Jiang, the man’s daughter, believed that her mother had been maliciously induced to spend and decided to seek justice.”

After the mentioned report was published, Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center refunded the entire 175,000 yuan Mr. Xu had spent as “anti-aging fees”.

Upon seeing the report, Ms. Liu filed a complaint with the local market supervision department. On March 4, she and staff from the market supervision department visited the Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center, where the store presented Ms. Liu with her mother, Ms. Li’s, consumption records. From October 2023 to February 2024, Ms. Li had recharged and consumed nearly 700,000 yuan at the store, with over 230,000 yuan remaining unused on her membership card.

The consumption records showed a variety of services offered at the store, including “eye moxibustion, ear lymphatic maintenance, neck lymphatic maintenance, Ren Meridian maintenance, vertebral maintenance, neck maintenance, brain age maintenance, bone maintenance,” and more.

Medical records provided by Ms. Liu indicated that her mother, Ms. Li, was hospitalized on January 13, 2022, due to brainstem infarction and was diagnosed with cognitive impairment and sleep disorders in January 2024. Ms. Liu stated, “My mother’s monthly pension is only a few thousand yuan. If she wasn’t deceived, how could an elderly person spend so much money?”

During negotiations, Ms. Liu demanded a full refund from Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center, but the store was willing to only return the over 230,000 yuan remaining unused and an additional 20,000 yuan. Ms. Liu was dissatisfied with this resolution.

On March 5, the staff of Yuanyang Health Management and Anti-Aging Center did not provide a direct response to media inquiries.
