The second “North America Taiwan Elite Career Expo” (TECCNA) was held at the Los Angeles Overseas Chinese Center on April 20 (Saturday), with over 200 job seekers from the Taiwanese and Asian communities in the greater Los Angeles area in attendance. The event was co-organized by Career Taiwan USA, the Southern California Yushan Technology Association, the Taiwan-US Technology Conference, the Los Angeles Taiwan Chamber of Commerce Youth Committee, and the Orange County Taiwan Chamber of Commerce Youth Committee. Economic Division Chief Liu Lunzheng and Deputy Director of the Overseas Chinese Center Zheng Xinru attended the event.
President of Yushan Technology, Tang Jingye, mentioned that the expo brought together professionals from various industries, including technology, business, finance, and marketing from renowned companies. Participants not only had the opportunity to learn about professional experiences in North America and the latest industry trends but also to network with potential employers.
The first seminar focused on “Career Transition, Transition, and Development” and was hosted by Tang Jingye. Dr. Liu Dengkai from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Ma Wenjun from Meta Media, and Professor Zeng Xianrong, founder of Cytolumina Technologies, were the guest speakers.
Liu Dengkai shared his varied career experiences and emphasized the importance of maintaining confidence, embracing change, and fostering harmonious relationships with colleagues in the American workplace. Zeng Xianrong highlighted the need for continuous learning and growth to meet the evolving market demands. He shared his personal experience of finding inner peace through meditation and reading Buddhist scriptures during challenging times at his company.
Ma Wenjun, a former Google software engineer and recipient of the 2019 Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Achievement, advised job seekers to immerse themselves in fields that interest them to facilitate self-improvement and successful completion of tasks.
The second seminar on “Cultural Differences in Employment between Taiwan and the United States,” moderated by Shen Yichang, featured Taboola Data Scientist Wu Menglun. Wu pointed out that while most Taiwanese companies emphasize teamwork and long-term loyalty, the U.S. prioritizes individual potential and innovation. Taiwanese individuals working in the U.S. were encouraged to maintain an open mindset, embrace new ideas and ways of thinking, enhance their imagination, and broaden their perspective to unleash creativity.
Sharing from Zhang Wenxuan, Research Director at AcuraStem, highlighted the American emphasis on work-life balance and the importance of exploring different areas, communicating with people from diverse backgrounds, attending social events, and building networks to understand industry dynamics and advance careers.
One of the founders of the global human resources platform startup Worca, Lin Diwen, reminded job seekers that the U.S. workplace culture is highly diverse, with private companies emphasizing efficiency, intense competition, and high pressure. However, compared to Taiwan, American companies are more open to communication and will encourage employees to voice their ideas and accommodate different opinions. Therefore, when asked for input by superiors, job seekers should respond clearly and concisely instead of giving vague or ambiguous answers.
The third seminar, moderated by Hu Aimei and titled “Employment Market in California,” featured panelists such as William Uranga, Talent Acquisition Director at Spokeo; Yang Congqin, who works at Away; and Yu Ningning, Vice President of Taboola. They all mentioned that the employment market in California is currently showing steady growth trends, with promising sectors including technology, healthcare, entertainment, and green energy. However, the California industry is facing various changes, such as the shift to remote work post-pandemic and the rising importance of learning new skills promptly in the era of artificial intelligence.
