Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the appointment of Attorney General Ashley Moody to fill the United States Senate seat vacated by Marco Rubio, who is stepping down from his position as a Senator after being nominated to serve as the Secretary of State under President Trump.
Governor DeSantis revealed on Thursday (January 16th) that he selected Moody to fill the vacancy due to her commitment to cutting federal spending and curbing illegal immigration.
Moody will join the Republican-controlled Senate until a special election next year.
DeSantis noted that Florida has many outstanding candidates for the Senate position, but he aimed to choose someone with a strong record on key Republican issues, including opposition to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.
Upon receiving the appointment notification earlier that day, Moody stated that she had only a few hours to prepare her speech, but she is ready to face the challenge.
She proclaimed, “I am ready to step up and fight for the country, to fight for President Trump.”
It is noteworthy that Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of Trump, was the co-chair of the Republican National Committee during the 2024 election, but she announced her withdrawal from the race for the Florida Senate seat at the end of last year.
