Pennsylvania Democratic Senator John Fetterman described the attempted assassination of former President Trump in Pennsylvania as a dark day in America.
In an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Fetterman expressed shock over the attack on Trump, calling it a dark day for the country. The attempted assassination took place at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Fetterman’s hometown, where Trump’s ear was injured, one person was killed, and two others were seriously injured. The gunman was shot and killed on site.
Fetterman was attending an event in Pennsylvania when the incident occurred. He cautiously urged against politicizing the violent event that took place during the rally. “I just want to remind everyone that, for me, this is not a political or strategic opportunity,” he said. “For Pennsylvania, for our country, this is an incredibly dark day.”
Fetterman also took to the social media platform X to express condolences to the victims of the shooting incident and wished Trump a speedy recovery.
US President Biden and Vice President Harris have both condemned the act of violence.
Republican Congressman Dan Meuser from Pennsylvania recounted the “panic” and “chaos” that ensued when gunfire erupted during Trump’s rally on Saturday. Meuser was seated to Trump’s right at the time.
Speaking to the Congress Mountain News, he described hearing eight to ten gunshots about five to six minutes into Trump’s speech. “People were understandably panicked. The Secret Service quickly sprang into action,” he said, adding, “Agents came out and told everyone to get down. It was a scene of panic and sorrow. Many were crying because they were afraid of the former president being shot.”
