Colombian plane brings back illegal immigrants from the United States.

Local media reports that the first of two Colombian Air Force planes carrying deportees expelled from the United States arrived in the capital city of Bogota earlier on Tuesday (January 28). In response, the Trump administration will lift visa restrictions and other punitive measures against Colombian citizens.

The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated on Monday that the first plane transported 110 Colombians from San Diego, California, with the second plane scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. Local media outlets Caracol Radio and El Tiempo reported that the first plane has already landed in Bogota.

Previously, Colombian President Gustavo Petro strongly objected to the use of military aircraft by the United States to deport illegal Colombian immigrants, labeling it as treating their citizens as criminals and refusing to allow American planes to land.

In a swift response, Trump announced a 25% tariff on all Colombian goods, escalating to 50% within a week. Additionally, immediate financial, banking, and economic sanctions will be imposed, along with visa restrictions on Colombian officials and citizens.

Dozens of Colombians who had appointments at the US Embassy in Bogota for visa processing on Monday had their appointments canceled, leaving them deeply disappointed.

According to diplomats, Petro had threatened retaliatory tariffs but made concessions with an impending economic crisis looming. Late on Sunday night, after tense negotiations, the Colombian government and US diplomats reached an agreement on the issue of repatriating illegal immigrants.

Officials from the Trump administration see this agreement as a demonstration of American strength, while Colombian officials view it as a victory for both parties.
