Chongqing Flood Displaces Nearly 10,000 People, Multiple Deaths including Three Generations Perishing

Recent heavy floods in Chongqing have resulted in multiple casualties. In Longquan Village, Dianjiang County, Chongqing, a three-story house collapsed due to a landslide, tragically claiming the lives of three family members. In addition, a local supermarket spanning 2,000 square meters had its shelves and goods washed away, causing the owner a loss of one to two million yuan.

According to the Chongqing Hydrological Monitoring Station, from 8:00 on July 10 to 8:00 on July 11, heavy to very heavy rainfall, and even in some areas, extreme heavy rainfall, was recorded in large parts of Chongqing. Upstream News reported on the 11th that numerous areas in Chongqing were inundated, including Changshou, Zhongxian, Fengdu, Dianjiang, Wuxi, and more. Government data indicates that over 6,000 people in these areas have been relocated.

As per official reports from Dianjiang County, Chongqing, as of 13:50 on the 11th, six people have perished due to the rainstorm disaster in the county.

Residents in Chongqing revealed to New Tang Dynasty that “the streets are submerged in water up to 3 meters deep; I had lowered the rolling shutter, but it was also washed away.”

In Dianjiang County, Gangjia Town, Huangsha Town, and other areas experienced house collapses due to river overflow and landslides, leading to numerous missing persons. In Chengxi Town of Dianjiang County, some road sections are inundated with water up to approximately 2 meters deep, trapping villagers.

Extreme News reported that on the evening of July 10 to the morning of July 11, Dianjiang County, Chongqing, experienced severe rainfall. In Longquan Village, Gangjia Town, a landslide occurred, causing a residential building to collapse, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives.

A villager surnamed Hu from Longquan Village confirmed the incident, stating that around 6:00 a.m. on the 11th, during the disaster assessment, the three-story house of villager Wang collapsed due to a landslide. Wang, along with his mother and son, were all trapped in the collapsed house. By around 11:00 a.m. on the 11th, the three individuals were found but had unfortunately passed away.

On July 11, under the flagship of China Youth Net, a two thousand square meter supermarket in Wudong Town, Chongqing, had its shelves and goods washed away.

One of the partners of the supermarket, Mr. He, mentioned that heavy rain suddenly began at night, and by the time they realized the flooding, the indoor water level had exceeded 1.5 meters. The supermarket shelves and goods were swept away, with ninety percent of the merchandise damaged, amounting to a projected loss of one to two million yuan.

Mr. He expressed bewilderment at the situation, as there is only a small ditch nearby and it had never faced such severe flooding before.

The Chongqing Water Resources Bureau announced that from the 9th to the 12th, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River basin are expected to encounter the largest flood since the beginning of the flood season. On the morning of the 10th, the first peak of this flooding process reached the central urban area of Chongqing. Due to heavy rainfall and the impact of upstream water, the water level of the Jialing River is rising rapidly with a fast flow rate. The Three Gorges Reservoir will open one floodgate each at 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on the 10th. The Yangtze River Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources of the Communist Party of China announced that on the 11th at 1:00 p.m., an additional floodgate at the Three Gorges Reservoir was opened, increasing the discharge flow to 33,000 cubic meters per second.

The Chongqing Hydrological Monitoring Station reported that from 8:00 on the 11th to 8:00 on the 12th, 12 districts and counties in Chongqing encountered heavy rainstorms. Due to the rainfall, 29 rivers in the city exceeded the flood warning water level.
