Chino Hills Sees Increase in Fake Surveillance Cameras

On March 2nd, Southern California police discovered a hidden surveillance camera near a residence in Chino Hills. Prior to this discovery, the residents had reported finding a portable power supply device in their driveway.

According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, during a search of the area surrounding the residence, a camera hidden in the bushes was found. The camera was disguised as a plant and connected to a power source. Officers have preserved the camera as evidence and are investigating to identify the person who installed the device.

In a statement on the 4th, the sheriff’s department said, “This discovery aligns with the increasing trend observed by law enforcement agencies across Southern California.” “Although the specific motive for installing this camera is currently unclear, it is likely being used to monitor the activities of residents to plan burglaries.”

Residents of Chino Hills are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. Residents who find similar devices are advised not to touch them and to contact the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department for assistance.

In 2024, officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also warned residents to remain vigilant against high-tech theft methods, as hidden surveillance devices were found in a flowerbed in Calabasas, which were likely used to monitor homeowners’ activities.

Officials from the LA County Sheriff’s Department pointed out that organized theft groups from South America – mainly Chileans and Colombians – often use these cameras and operate across states to commit theft.

In June 2024, the Alhambra Police Department in Los Angeles County reported an attempted theft incident where the victim found a hidden camera pointing towards their residence.

The police department wrote on Facebook, “Unfortunately, disguised cameras have become a method used in residential burglaries.” These cameras are often strategically placed in concealed areas such as bushes to help thieves gather information about homeowners.

In July 2024, a hidden camera was also discovered in Arcadia, a nearby city. Local authorities stated that the camera was found in a bush in front of residences and was aimed at multiple houses.

According to law enforcement, the camera was connected to a mobile hotspot on a phone, potentially used to upload recordings through cloud applications.
