On December 20, 2024, the Taiwan Legislative Yuan held a meeting to review three laws including the Election and Recall Act. To prevent the opposition party from pushing through the laws, nearly a thousand people gathered in front of the Kuomintang Central Party Headquarters on the evening of the 18th to protest. Influencers such as Ba Jiong and “Min Nan Wolf” Chen Baiyuan appeared at the protest, with Chen Baiyuan even expressing his support through a new song called “Counterattack the Mainland”.
A civic group organized the “Winter Green Bird in Taipei” rally in front of the Kuomintang Central Party Headquarters on the evening of the 18th, protesting the Kuomintang’s collaboration with the People’s Party to forcefully pass the legislation. Ba Jiong and Chen Baiyuan performed the newly released song “Counterattack the Mainland” at the event.
However, on the 20th, the Taiwan Legislative Yuan, driven by the Kuomintang and People’s Party, passed amendments to the Election and Recall Act, including stricter provisions for recall petitions. Democratic Progressive Party legislators shouted about the deprivation of civil rights and vowed to file for constitutional interpretation. The amendments passed on this occasion all relate to raising the threshold for recall petitions. The “Constitutional Court Law” was also passed in the third reading later in the evening.
Chen Baiyuan’s new song “Counterattack the Mainland” released the previous night is gaining traction on the internet. The music video is titled: “Inviting the Kuomintang in mainland China to counter the Communists and restore Taiwan to the Taiwanese people!”
The song narrates the history of the Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party, as well as the Nationalist Party’s retreat to Taiwan. The lyrics question, “If the Republic of China has not perished, why choose surrender? Have you not seen how many people have been persecuted by the CCP and forced into exile, with no recourse for those affected by wrongful policies, unknown numbers of deaths caused by that demonic figure Mao? We retreated to Taiwan for what reason? To resist communism, to one day counterattack back. Now the whole world is supporting us in countering communism, yet some choose to give up.”
The song also reminds everyone not to forget who the real enemy is: “They (the CCP) are still watching from across the strait waiting for us to disunite. These events haven’t even spanned a hundred years, but I firmly believe the Republic of China will surely triumph.”
The lyrics further state: “Without the founding fathers, who would we be now? Without Generalissimo Chiang, who would rule over us now? Without the Kuomintang preserving the Chinese heritage, who would uphold it? Without the Democratic Progressive Party, where would democratic constitutionalism come from? Without the martyrs who sacrificed their lives, who would protect the Republic of China now? If the Chinese people do not unite, I tell you the true external forces will invade.”
The song ends with: “This song is dedicated to all who persist in countering communism, and it also sincerely invites the Kuomintang to uphold its party principles and counterattack the mainland! Let us all respond to this song together.”
The release of this song has touched many Taiwanese netizens and resonated with numerous Chinese netizens, leading to comments such as:
“I am from Guangdong, mainland China. Both President Sun and Generalissimo Chiang are my idols. I look forward to the day when the mainland territories of the Republic of China are liberated again, and the flag of the Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth flies once more over the land of China. Taiwan, keep it up!”
“After listening, tears nearly welled up in my eyes… so touching! The founding father must be proud of you! I hope everyone can awaken.”
“After listening, I felt immense sorrow, tears welled up in my eyes. I am a middle-aged mainland Chinese, witnessing various misfortunes on this land. Unfortunately, my awakening came too late.”
“I am in the mainland and seeing all this is heartbreaking. Nobody told me when I was young that the Republic of China still exists. My grandmother was born during the Republic of China era and is still around. In this lifetime, my only wish is for future generations to hold the CCP accountable.”
“Regardless of being pro-Taiwan or pro-Republic of China, we should all stand together against communism.”
“Breaking through the blind spots, it’s truly ironic that the Kuomintang, who should be the most anti-communist, is acting in this manner.”
“I am from Guangzhou in the occupied territories. My ancestors were Nationalist Army servicemen, and I have always detested the CCP… If you are pro-Taiwan, I want to tell you to guard your freedom and democracy, protect Taiwan, keep it up! If you are pro-Republic of China, let’s together safeguard our Republic of China and hope to rescue the people in the occupied territories soon.”
“The invasion of Marxism-Leninism is despicable. They speak as if they were the ones fighting, but the Anti-Japanese War was absolutely fought by the Kuomintang!”
“Everyone in the world must understand the truth about the CCP! Support the continuous revelation of the truth! Evil cannot prevail over righteousness!”
“If you are Chinese, you should know that there can be no democracy with the Communist Party. If you are Taiwanese, you should know that there can be no peace with the Communist Party. If you are Chinese, you should know that the Communist Party is the biggest obstacle to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”
