On March 28th, the incident quickly became a trending topic on Weibo, sparking discussions about road safety issues in Shenyang.
According to the Yangzhou Evening News, around 10 a.m. that day, a white SUV was driving ahead normally, followed by a BYD car. Upon reviewing the dashcam footage from the BYD car, it was discovered that the white SUV in front had run over a manhole cover with its right rear wheel, causing the cover to spring up and hit the BYD car that was following.

Many netizens expressed concerns, with comments like, “Thank goodness it was a car driver, what if it had been a motorcyclist?” “A manhole cover turning into a ‘missile’ hitting a car, where is the maintenance of urban facilities, where is the safety bottom line?” “Why aren’t manhole covers leveled, creating loud noises when cars run over them. Some roads have sunk about 8 centimeters.” “So frightening.” “Accidents coming from unexpected sources.”
Some netizens shared their own experiences, with one recalling, “Earlier, on a fast road with only one lane open due to construction, traffic was slow around 50 km/h, with vehicles following each other closely. A truck ahead ran over a metal plate, and it flew off, hitting my car. I reported it to the police, but it eventually went unresolved, and had to deal with it through my own insurance.”
