On the eve of Christmas in California, a man encountered a massive wave measuring 108 feet (32.9 meters) high while surfing at the beach, potentially breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest wave ever surfed.
According to reports from KSBW TV, the 23-year-old man named Alessandro Slebir hails from Santa Cruz, California. On December 23rd last year, he and his friends headed to Mavericks near Half Moon Bay for a surfing session.
There, he managed to ride a towering wave reaching 108 feet, propelling him into the spotlight of media attention. If confirmed, this feat would surpass the current world record of over 20 feet.
Slebir described his experience on the surfboard as fast-paced, possibly reaching speeds of 30, 40, or even 50 miles per hour. The waves were so high that they would suck up a lot of water before crashing back down on him, creating a strange sensation.
He surfed over 20 times that day, with the monumental 108-foot wave possibly making history. However, he mentioned that his main focus is on hitting the waters every day rather than setting world records.
It is still too early to determine if Slebir has set a new record. The verdict will be made by the Guinness World Records and the World Surf League, a process that may take several months.
The current holder of the Guinness World Record is the German surfing enthusiast Sebastian Steudtner. In 2020, he set the record at 86 feet (26.2 meters) on the coast of Portugal.
