Dozens of firefighters in uniform from California gathered outside a cancer research and treatment center in Orange County to surprise their colleague who was about to undergo his final chemotherapy treatment. The heartfelt gesture was organized to support Brandon Willson, a battalion chief at the Corona Fire Department, who has been battling blood cancer for the past six months.
On June 20, firefighters from various locations in Southern California, including the Corona Fire Department and the Orange City Fire Department, lined up in front of the City of Hope Orange County, forming two long queues for a special applause ceremony for Brandon Willson. The scene was filled with colorful balloons, cheering signs, and an atmosphere of joy and celebration.
Messages on posters read “Congratulations, Brandon!” and “Hope First.” As Brandon Willson stepped out of the car, he was moved to tears by the heartfelt tribute from his colleagues and family. Accompanied by his wife Amber and their two sons, Luke, 9, and Gavin, 7, he walked into the hospital to receive his treatment.
Annette Walker, the CEO of City of Hope Orange County, expressed that on Brandon’s special day of his final chemotherapy treatment, the cancer center was filled with energy and excitement, celebrating his journey.
Brandon Willson, 42, has been serving at the Corona Fire Department for over 17 years, earning the love and respect of residents in the Corona area and other communities.
In January, Brandon was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, a highly treatable form of cancer. He received treatment at the Lennar Foundation Cancer Center in Irvine, Orange County, a designated cancer center by the National Cancer Institute.
During the treatment process, Brandon praised the healthcare staff for their excellence, care, and respect towards him.
According to Dr. Tanya Siddiqi, a renowned hematologist specializing in blood cancer at City of Hope Orange County, witnessing her patients completing their final chemotherapy and achieving relief is always a special moment. She emphasized the importance of support from loved ones, friends, and colleagues during the challenging treatment process.
Dr. Siddiqi expressed her gratitude towards Brandon’s colleagues for planning the surprise celebration, stating that such gestures make a significant impact on patients’ morale.
The inspirational celebration coincided with National Cancer Survivors Month in June, with the hope that Brandon Willson’s experience will inspire and bring hope to others battling cancer.
Dr. Siddiqi expressed optimism for Brandon’s quick return to the Corona Fire Department to continue his life-saving duties, highlighting his strength and youthfulness.
