A mother in Brooklyn was arrested by police for allegedly drowning her 6-year-old daughter, as reported by the Epoch Times on the 10th. During the court hearing, prosecutors revealed a shocking claim: she stated in court that she was “bathing her daughter” at the time.
The 6-year-old girl, Madelyn Tavarez, was found drowned in a bathtub last Friday, February 7th. When police arrived at the scene in Highland Park, the child showed no signs of life, and she was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Medical Center.
According to police sources, when officers arrived at the scene in Highland Park, they found Madelyn immersed in the bathtub, her eyes showing signs of struggle, indicating that she had fought for her life. A relative told the police that the girl’s mother, Karla Espinal, forcibly pushed her daughter into the water, causing her to lose consciousness.
According to the criminal complaint filed by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, 27-year-old Espinal confessed to the police, saying, “I was bathing my daughter at that time.”
Currently, Espinal has been ordered to remain in custody and undergo a mental evaluation. Police suspect that the 6-year-old girl may have been submerged in water for up to 20 minutes. Her father, Jorge Tavarez, stated that just an hour before the incident, his daughter was healthy and lively.
Espinal appeared in court on Sunday wearing a mask, facing charges of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, and endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors are awaiting the results of the autopsy to determine whether to add more serious charges against her.
