In Hampshire, England, a teenager recently hand-drew a 1,300-page flipbook, breaking the Guinness World Record for the most pages in a flipbook. Flipbooks are small booklets made up of multiple comic images that creates an animated effect when flipped quickly, giving the illusion of watching a short animation.
According to a report on the Guinness World Records website on April 10th, 17-year-old Max Budgen completed the flipbook titled “Thunder Strikes” within a few days, setting a new record for the most pages in a flipbook.
During the challenge, Budgen would sit at his desk, draw on the train, and at school. He found one of the most challenging moments to be maintaining the narrative as flipbooks are typically meant to be concise, lively, and engaging.
He said, “When I reached around 500 pages, I started to feel quite bored and ran out of ideas. However, despite that, I reminded myself that breaking a world record is not easy. So, I persevered and kept on drawing.”
Upon completing the flipbook, Budgen didn’t feel an explosion of excitement but rather pride in reaching such a significant milestone throughout the process. Prior to this, he had never drawn anything exceeding 300 pages, making it an unforgettable moment for him.
Budgen shared, “The 1,000th page was truly unbelievable because I never thought I would reach that point.”
For young individuals aspiring to break records, Budgen advises, “If you want to become a record holder before adulthood, you must have perseverance. Commitment is crucial, especially in endeavors like this.”
He added, “I also believe a sense of humor has helped me a lot, especially in seeing the bright side when things get really tough.”
