Recently, the body of a Ukrainian mayor who was captured by Russia has been repatriated and on Thursday (December 5), he was laid to rest in his homeland.
According to reports from Reuters citing Ukrainian officials, the body of 63-year-old mayor Yevhen Matvieiev of Dniprorudne was buried outside the capital Kiev on Thursday. He had been held captive by Russia and showed signs of torture on his body.
When the Russian army approached Dniprorudne during the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the long-serving mayor Matvieiev could have evacuated to a safe area.
However, he chose to stay behind to coordinate humanitarian aid and security for the residents. Weeks later, he was captured and disappeared. Last week, his body was returned to Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry could not be reached for immediate comment. Russia denies mistreating prisoners of war and detainees.
