On Wednesday, February 26th, President Trump announced that the United States has reached an agreement with Ukraine on a mineral deal and finalized plans to meet with Ukrainian President Zelensky in Washington this Friday.
Trump announced during the start of the first cabinet meeting at the White House on Wednesday morning, “It’s now confirmed that we will be signing an agreement.”
On Tuesday evening, Trump hinted that the meeting was not fully confirmed yet as Ukraine was still negotiating the final details of the agreement with US representatives.
According to Politico, the meeting is expected to take place at the White House, rather than at the Mar-a-Lago estate where Trump is scheduled to go on Friday evening.
Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv on Wednesday that only a framework agreement has been confirmed so far. He mentioned that the signing of a comprehensive agreement will depend on his meeting with Trump on Friday.
Zelensky said, “After talking to Trump, I will understand everything. For me, the most important thing is to figure out if the US will stop military aid. If it stops, can we purchase weapons directly from the US or utilize frozen Russian assets?”
When asked about what security guarantees the US will provide, Trump mentioned during the cabinet meeting, “I will not promise too much security as we will let Europe handle that.”
