Breaking News: Ohio State Legislature Introduces Legislation Regarding Transgender Students’ Use of Public Facilities

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill on Wednesday that prohibits transgender students from using multi-user public facilities in all public and private schools in the state, from kindergarten to university, that do not align with their birth gender.

The bill, supported by the Republicans, is called the “Protect All Students Act” and requires all schools to designate separate restrooms, bathrooms, locker rooms, and overnight facilities for males and females on school premises and other facilities used for school activities. The use of these facilities will be based on the gender assigned to students at birth or near birth. The bill does not include an enforcement mechanism.

The bill’s sponsor, Republican Senator Jerry Cirino, stated that the legislation revolves around safety, security, and common sense. He emphasized that it aims to protect the safety of children and future generations in private spaces where they are most vulnerable to harm.

Exceptions to the restrictions are made for school staff, emergency situations, and individuals assisting young children or disabled persons. Schools are also allowed to provide facilities such as single-use or family restrooms.

Currently, at least 11 states have passed laws similar to Ohio’s, barring transgender girls and women from entering female restrooms in public schools – and in some cases, other government facilities designated for females.
