The United States’ top diplomat has stated that the U.S. must cooperate with its allies to collectively halt Communist China’s attempts to reshape the international order.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken delivered a speech at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. on July 1st, emphasizing the necessity for the U.S. to invest in domestic industries and work in conjunction with allies to handle all matters related to the Chinese Communist Party.
“We are at the end of the post-Cold War era, with all sides competing to shape the future world order,” Blinken said.
He added that the CCP is seeking to replace the U.S. and establish itself as the dominant force in the international system economically, diplomatically, and militarily.
Despite the high costs, Blinken asserts that the U.S. will confront China wherever it seeks to expand its influence to prevent the regime from gaining momentum in its efforts to establish a new authoritarian global governance model.
“Our partners in Asia understand that if left unchecked, it (China) will be an omnipresent and larger threat,” he stated.
“This means not only recognizing but also accepting the fact that we are engaged in a fierce competition, one that will shape the international environment for the next few decades.”
Blinken mentioned that the Biden administration is seeking cooperation with regional allies to address the growing and interconnected threats faced by the rules-based international order globally, many of which ultimately involve China.
He also touched upon Russia’s war in Ukraine, noting that the vast majority of Russia’s new ammunition, missiles, and tanks are manufactured with Chinese components. Blinken pointed out that over 90% of all microelectronic devices used by Russia come from China, and 70% of machine tools are also sourced from China.
According to Blinken, U.S. allies in Europe now view China (CCP) as a participant in the largest conflict the region has seen in 80 years and are increasingly willing to support U.S. efforts to combat the regime. He stated that this marks a change since the current administration took office.
“The position we find ourselves in now is vastly different from three years ago… We can confidently face challenges, recognize the developments, acknowledge the challenges ahead, but also know that we have made the right investments in ourselves, as well as our allies and partners,” Blinken said.
