Welcome to the breaking news episode of “News Insight” on Wednesday, July 10th. In this episode, we have Professor Song Guocheng, a senior researcher at the International Relations Research Center of National Chengchi University, Associate Professor Zheng Qinmo from the Department of Diplomacy and International Relations at Tamkang University, and the host Zhang Dongxu.
Today’s focus: “China’s entire society is ‘lying flat’! Can’t block the river water, can’t block the people’s saliva! Why is the CCP actively manipulating international multilateral organizations? Can the new UK Prime Minister solve the three major crises after Brexit? The new Cold War with global polarization taking shape!
The NATO summit, starting on the 9th, has shifted its strategic focus towards the CCP. US President Biden called for the establishment of an alliance composed of countries from around the world to deal with the CCP, Russia, and others.
The Speaker of the US House of Representatives pledged to push for comprehensive legislation to counter the CCP. Former officials from both parties are cooperating to accelerate holding the CCP accountable for the pandemic.
Why did the CCP suddenly send troops to Belarus for military exercises, approaching Poland at NATO’s doorstep? What challenges and opportunities might Europe face after elections in the UK and France?
Is the CCP really trying to revive the economy with the Third Plenary Session? Why are flood victims at the breach of the Dongting Lake levee asking not to donate money?
The NATO 75th anniversary summit, starting on Tuesday, 9th, in Washington DC, with 32 member countries and 4 Asia-Pacific partners (Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand). This session focuses on supporting Ukraine, providing dozens of air defense systems, and highlighting the challenges posed by the CCP. The summit’s communique will address the CCP directly.
In his opening speech, US President Biden said, “Ensuring that we can build an alliance of countries from around the world to address China (CCP), Russia, and everything happening in the world.”
The 2022 version of NATO’s strategic concept for the first time identifies Communist China as a “strategic challenge” for the alliance. The NATO Secretary-General emphasized recently, “Security is not a regional issue but a global one.” The US Ambassador to NATO proposed the concept of a “unified global theater.” Think tank experts believe that the CCP poses a “long-term threat” to NATO.
What is Associate Professor Zheng Qinmo’s observation of these events?
Before the NATO summit, the US, Europe, and Asia-Pacific partners demonstrated unity to uphold the international order. Ahead of the summit, parliamentary elections were held in the UK and France, with the UK electing a new Prime Minister and France’s National Assembly showing a three-way balance without any party achieving a majority. Europe has been consolidating unity in recent years to address the challenges posed by the CCP in various ways, with great interest focused on the UK and France’s post-election foreign policies and policies towards China.
How does Professor Song Guocheng view this situation?
Ahead of the NATO summit, the militaries of 29 US, European, and Asian countries conducted exercises around the Pacific, while Japan and the Philippines signed a mutual access agreement, and the South Korean President visited the US Indo-Pacific Command. On the other side, from July 4th, Communist China and Russia held the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Kazakhstan and have been actively expanding their partnership countries in recent years. The CCP seems to be attempting to rebuild an organization similar to the Warsaw Pact from the era of the Soviet Union. Additionally, the CCP suddenly dispatched troops to Belarus for military exercises near the Polish border, and the CCP’s Shandong carrier appeared in the Western Pacific.
What is Associate Professor Zheng Qinmo’s perspective on this?
The world is watching how NATO will counter the CCP. Following the summit, the authoritarian regime will hold the Third Plenary Session starting on July 15th, gradually releasing some so-called reform initiatives. They will establish what they refer to as “Joint Tax and Police Combat Centers.” There are rumors circulating about internal dialogues among high-ranking CCP officials, preparing for “civil war,” violent taxation, and wartime economic measures to address economic and political crises; otherwise, the party and government will go bankrupt.
What is Professor Song Guocheng’s opinion on the Third Plenary Session?
US House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke at a think tank event, emphasizing that the CCP is the greatest threat to global peace. He vowed to push more legislation before the November House elections to focus Congress on using all available tools to combat the CCP, allowing the government to strike the CCP on the first day of its term. The chairman of the Congressional Anti-Communist Committee echoed, “The CCP fears a united America the most.”
Recently, the Traditional Fund Foundation, with officials from both parties, issued a report stating that the pandemic caused over $18 trillion in economic losses in the US. They demanded legal accountability for the CCP’s negligence, lack of transparency, and systematic cover-up of the epidemic, urging Congress to amend laws and prioritize investigating the origin of the pandemic.
What is Associate Professor Zheng Qinmo’s view on this bipartisan movement?
This year, floods have hit multiple regions in mainland China, with citizens frequently questioning the involvement of authorities in these disasters. Recently, the second levee of Dongting Lake collapsed, leading to public criticism of the CCP. Reports suggested that in Huarong County alone, over 2,000 people lost their lives, while Pingjiang County reported 30,000 people missing. Flood victims are urging the public not to donate to the official CCP channels, with instances of businesses facing public backlash after making donations.
