Argentina’s President Milei: 90% Tax Cuts Planned Next Year

Argentina’s President Javier Milei delivered a televised speech on Tuesday evening to celebrate his one-year anniversary in office, during which he announced a series of economic policies set to be launched in 2025, including fiscal and tax reforms.

In a 37-minute speech reported by the Argentine media outlet “Buenos Aires Pioneer,” Milei revealed plans to remove currency controls in 2025, allowing all transactions that were previously only conducted in pesos to be carried out in dollars.

Milei also announced his intention to take new steps to shut down the central bank, a key promise he made during his election campaign.

Another major economic policy highlighted in his speech was tax reform, with Milei pledging to eliminate “90% of national tax revenue” and granting provinces autonomy in managing their tax collections.

“We will witness true tax competition among provinces next year, to see who can attract more investments,” Milei stated.

On Wednesday, Milei shared the above-mentioned news on the social platform X. Additionally, he retweeted several posts about Argentina’s economic growth since he took office.

Argentina’s Minister of Economy, Luis Andres Caputo, reported that inflation in Argentina dropped to 2.4% in November, the lowest level since July 2020, after reaching a peak of 25.5% when Milei first assumed office in December 2023.

Furthermore, economist Ramiro Castiñeira shared a chart showing Argentina’s “per capita GDP reaching a new high.”

Milei also retweeted a report from the Foundation for Freedom and Progress, revealing that Argentina’s ranking in the Economic Freedom Index among 176 countries improved from 145th to 84th (mostly free).

In contrast, in 2014, according to the “2014 Index of Economic Freedom” released by the Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal, Argentina, Venezuela, and several other Latin American countries were categorized as “repressed,” having the lowest level of economic freedom.
