American woman buys painting for $3 at thrift store, sells it for nearly a thousand times the price

In Ohio, USA, a woman made a remarkable discovery while browsing through a thrift store – she bought a seemingly ordinary painting for $3, only to later find out that it was worth nearly 1,000 times that amount when she auctioned it off. This stroke of luck left her amazed, dubbing it a once-in-a-lifetime fortune.

Marissa Alcorn, a resident of Dayton, Ohio, stumbled upon the painting of a small church inside a frame while shopping at the Goodwill thrift store with her fiancé in mid-January, as reported by WDTN TV on March 19.

Despite not finding the painting particularly appealing, Alcorn decided to make the purchase as it was priced at just $2.99. It wasn’t until they got back to their car that she noticed something special about the painting.

At the bottom of the frame, there was a small plaque. Out of curiosity, she searched the name on it and discovered that it was a painting by American artist Johann Berthelsen, whose works typically fetch thousands of dollars and are collected by galleries across the United States.

Initially, Alcorn was in disbelief. She shared a photo of the painting on Facebook, where some users suggested she get it appraised. Subsequently, she found an auction house in Cincinnati that promptly accepted the painting.

On February 19, the painting was auctioned off at the house for $2,875, a staggering 962 times the price Alcorn had paid for it.

Alcorn expressed her astonishment, stating, “I believe it’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I don’t think I’ll ever find something like this again, but you never know.”

She mentioned that she and her fiancé recently got engaged, so the money from the auction will go towards their wedding expenses.
