Pakistan police said on Wednesday (January 29) that a man who had recently brought his family back to Pakistan from the United States admitted to shooting his underage daughter, allegedly because he was unhappy with the content she was posting on TikTok.
According to Reuters, the shooting incident took place on Tuesday (January 28) on the streets of Quetta, a city in southwest Pakistan.
Police official Babar Baloch stated that initially the suspect, Anwar ul-Haq, claimed that his 15-year-old daughter, born in the United States, was shot dead by an unidentified assailant, but later confessed to being the perpetrator.
Another police investigator, Zohaib Mohsin, revealed that preliminary investigations showed the family was dissatisfied with the victim’s clothing, lifestyle, and social circle.
The family had been living in the United States for about 25 years and recently returned to Balochistan, a Muslim-majority province in Pakistan.
Haq admitted to the police that his daughter had been posting “objectionable” content on TikTok since her time in the United States and continued to do so after returning to Pakistan, which led him to decide to kill her.
Police stated that the suspect’s brother-in-law was also arrested on suspicion of involvement in the murder.
Pakistan, with a population of 241 million, has over 54 million TikTok users. The Pakistan government has raised objections multiple times to “obscene content” on the social media platform, and the platform has recently started complying with Pakistan’s requests to remove some content.
