Guo Weizhan, the son of Guo Fu, a disciple of Ip Man and president of the Wing Chun Association in Foshan, Guangdong Province, China, passed away on the night of March 28th. According to sources, Guo Weizhan, who regularly practiced martial arts and was in good health, unexpectedly suffered a heart attack leading to his death.

The news of Guo Weizhan’s passing spread online on April 1st, with the obituary stating that he passed away during the Hai hour (between 21:00 and 23:00) on March 28th, and the funeral service took place at 10:00 am on March 30th.

The obituary indicated that Guo Weizhan was “75 years old,” however, public information online shows that he was born in 1953 and began studying Wing Chun under his father, Guo Fu, in 1962. Guo Fu was one of the first disciples of Ip Man in Foshan, who later became the fifth-generation successor of Wing Chun in Foshan and established the Guo Wing Chun Association.

In 2004, Guo Weizhan established the Guo Wing Chun General Association and served as its president. In 2013, he was recognized as a representative inheritor of intangible cultural heritage of Wing Chun at the municipal level. In 2014, the Wing Chun General Association separated from the Foshan Wushu Association, with Guo Weizhan serving as the president. In 2018, the Wing Chun General Association was renamed the Foshan Wing Chun Association.

It is reported that Guo Weizhan’s disciples are spread across the country and around the world, totaling nearly 3,000 people. Following the news of his passing, many netizens expressed sorrow, with some reminiscing about their interactions with him, saying, “It’s so sudden. The memory of eating oranges at Shifu Bo’s house last time is still vivid. Rest in peace, Shifu Bo.” And another said, “We were drinking together at the end of last year, and now he’s gone, too sudden.”

The obituary did not specify the exact cause of Guo Weizhan’s death, but sources revealed that as a martial artist who maintained good health, his untimely demise was due to a sudden heart attack.
