Chinese Actress Zhao Wei’s Current Situation and Recent Activity
Chinese actress Zhao Wei, who was suddenly blacklisted by Chinese authorities in August 2021, has been facing significant challenges in her career. She was labeled as a “problematic artist,” leading to her works being taken down from various platforms. With her entertainment career at a standstill, Zhao Wei announced at the end of last year that she had been divorced from businessman Huang Youlong for several years. There were rumors that she was struggling to make a comeback, but then faced her shares being frozen. On the late night of March 8th, she made a rare update on her Weibo account revealing her location in Yunnan.
On March 8th, Zhao Wei posted a picture of the moon in the clear night sky on her Weibo, quoting lyrics from the song “The Moon at That Time” by her friend, Mandarin singer Faye Wong, saying, “Tonight’s moon… the moon at that time.” This marks the first time she has spoken publicly since confirming her divorce from Huang Youlong at the end of last year.
Zhao Wei married Huang Youlong in 2008, and they welcomed their daughter “Little April” in 2010. The couple had been actively involved in the capital market, with reports suggesting their involvement in questionable financial dealings. In 2018, they were fined 300,000 yuan each and banned from the securities market for five years. Additionally, they faced numerous lawsuits from stockholders, with over 540 claims filed in 2019, including 215 cases against Zhao Wei alone.
On August 26, 2021, Zhao Wei’s film and television works were abruptly removed from various Chinese platforms, her super topic on Weibo was shut down, and her unreleased projects saw changes in cast. It wasn’t until 2024 that her social media platforms returned to normal, and her videos were unblocked.
The reasons behind Zhao Wei’s sudden blacklisting have been subject to various speculations, including her relationship with Jack Ma and alleged involvement in political power struggles between former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin and Xi Jinping. Despite occasional rumors of a comeback in recent years, nothing substantial has materialized.
On December 28, 2024, Zhao Wei announced her divorce from Huang Youlong, emphasizing that their legal marriage had long dissolved. Her timing for this announcement coincided with new debt claims against Huang Youlong, prompting a company called “Smart Choice Investment” to file a lawsuit in the Hong Kong High Court, alleging overdue debt of approximately 3.72 billion Hong Kong dollars, demanding a total repayment of 7.53 billion Hong Kong dollars, referring to Huang Youlong as “Zhao Wei’s husband.”
Zhao Wei’s appearance on Weibo on March 8th attracted attention from netizens, with some expressing surprise and excitement at her online presence. She interacted with fans, wishing a happy birthday with others, and encouraging a student preparing for the national college entrance examination. Fans noticed that her post’s IP location indicated Yunnan, where she had previously shared pictures of spinning tops on Instagram. Considering that spinning tops are a traditional sport in Yunnan, some boldly speculated that Zhao Wei might be currently residing there.
