Czech Lower House Passes Motion Opposing Beijing’s Distortion of Resolution 2758.

On December 13, 2024, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Czech House of Representatives passed a resolution regarding the distorted United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 by the People’s Republic of China and supporting Taiwan’s participation in international organizations. The resolution received strong bipartisan support and was hailed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) as a just voice for Taiwan.

The Czech House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee’s resolution on the 12th opposed the Chinese Communist Party’s improper linking of UN Resolution 2758 and the “One-China Principle,” rejected China’s claim that Taiwan is an indivisible part of their territory, and expressed support for Taiwan’s international participation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) highly appreciated and sincerely thanked the Czech House of Representatives for this stance.

The resolution pointed out that UN Resolution 2758 only dealt with the issue of the representation of the People’s Republic of China within the United Nations, without mentioning Taiwan’s political status, international participation, establishing China’s sovereignty over Taiwan, or making any decisions regarding Taiwan’s accession to the UN or any other international organization.

The resolution also criticized China for distorting UN Resolution 2758 and called upon China to respect the content of the resolution and stop abusing it for political purposes. It also expressed support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and Interpol.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan) thanked the Czech House of Representatives for speaking out for justice for Taiwan, and urged the international community to continue taking concrete actions to counter China’s incorrect interpretation of the distorted UN Resolution 2758. Taiwan will continue to cooperate with like-minded global partners to defend the core values shared by the global democratic camp and maintain regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

In July of this year, more than 50 members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) participated in a vote in Taipei on this initiative, including IPAC co-chair Eva Decroix. Australia was the first country in the alliance to pass such a motion, followed by the Netherlands, the European Parliament, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Czech Republic became the sixth country to pass relevant motions in support of the IPAC “2758 Initiative”.

This resolution by the Czech House of Representatives signifies a growing global recognition of Taiwan’s importance and the need to stand up against China’s attempts to isolate Taiwan internationally. It also demonstrates the solidarity and support Taiwan has been receiving from the international community in upholding its participation in critical international organizations.
