On Thursday, November 21st, former Republican Federal Congressman Matt Gaetz announced that he will withdraw from the nomination for Attorney General. He was nominated to be Attorney General by President Trump before his election.
Gaetz took to social media X on Thursday to post, “Yesterday, I had a great meeting with senators. I appreciate their thoughtful feedback and the strong support I’ve received from many of them.”
“Although the momentum is strong, it is clear that my appointment unfairly diverted attention from the critical work of the Trump/Pence transition team. We do not have time to waste on meaningless and protracted fights in Washington, therefore I will withdraw my nomination for Attorney General,” he wrote.
“Trump’s Justice Department must be in place and ready from day one,” Gaetz said.
“I will still do my best to ensure Donald J. Trump becomes the most successful president in history. I will forever be honored by President Trump’s nomination to lead the Justice Department, and I am confident he will save America,” Gaetz concluded.
President Trump later responded to Gaetz’s withdrawal from the nomination for Attorney General on Truth Social, saying he appreciates Gaetz’s efforts and understands his decision.
“I am very grateful for Gaetz’s recent efforts to seek confirmation as Attorney General. He did a great job, but at the same time, he did not want to distract the government’s attention, he has great respect for the government. Gaetz has a bright future ahead, and I look forward to seeing all the great things he will accomplish!”
