In the next two years, Taiwan’s large weapons equipment purchased from the United States will begin to be delivered one after another. The Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense confirmed on November 6 that the procured HIMARS multiple launch rocket system, M1A2T main battle tanks, and TOW-2B anti-tank missiles will all be delivered before the end of the year. Additionally, the first of the 66 newly manufactured F-16V fighter jets purchased by Taiwan will also roll out before the year’s end.
The F-16V, HIMARS rocket artillery, and M1A2T tanks are all major equipment approved for sale by the Trump administration in the first term, enduring challenges such as the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Now, they are finally beginning to arrive gradually. The Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense stated that 15 out of 18 major arms procurement cases from the U.S. are proceeding as planned, with the HIMARS missile system delivery being accelerated.
The first batch of 11 HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems ordered by Taiwan, along with the accompanying Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS), have already arrived in Taiwan. These Army Tactical Missiles, with a range of 300 kilometers, provide the Taiwanese Army with a certain level of stand-off strike capability.
While Taiwan already has domestically produced Thunderbolt-2000 multiple launch rocket systems, the HIMARS system has a longer range. The Taiwanese Army aims to utilize the HIMARS for immediate cross-regional reinforcement of firepower, reducing the effectiveness of armored brigade cross-regional mobility. In the future, the HIMARS will mainly be responsible for long-range strikes against high-value maritime targets, while the Thunderbolt-2000 will primarily support fire within 24 nautical miles for anti-landing operations, forming a comprehensive long, medium, and short-range firepower strike capability.
Recently, the Taiwanese Ministry of National Defense confirmed that 38 M1A2T main battle tanks will arrive in Taiwan before the end of the year. Preparations for installation and subsequent training ground arrangements are already in place, with the full fleet of 108 tanks set to arrive in Taiwan within three years. These 108 M1A2T tanks will be stationed in northern Taiwan for defense of the capital region.
The U.S. government also recently announced the sale of three sets of advanced surface-to-air missile systems (NASAMS) to Taiwan. The NASAMS system demonstrated excellent performance in real combat situations in Ukraine and can synergize with Taiwan’s existing Patriot air defense system. This represents a significant step towards modernizing Taiwan’s air defense architecture.
