Former U.S. President Trump has agreed to be interviewed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as a victim of a shooting incident, which is part of the bureau’s routine investigation into the motive of the attempted assassination case against Trump.
Kevin Rojek, head of the FBI’s Pittsburgh office, stated in a telephone conference held on Monday (July 29th) that the interview with the former president would be consistent with any other victim interviews conducted by the agency.
“We want to hear his perspective on what he observed, just like any other witness to this crime,” he told reporters.
“This is a standard victim interview, just like we do with any other crime victim in any other situation,” Rojek added.
Victim interviews are a routine part of criminal investigations, but they are voluntary for the victims.
Through over 450 interviews, the FBI has gained more insights into the 20-year-old shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks, finding that he is “very intelligent, has a college education, and a stable job.” However, he has a solitary personality, with his social circle mainly consisting of his family, having few friends in his life, and minimal interaction with peers even on online gaming platforms he frequented.
Rojek mentioned that the shooter’s parents have been “very cooperative” with the authorities’ investigation, stating they had no prior knowledge of the shooting incident. The FBI finds this claim credible.
The FBI has yet to determine the motive behind Crooks’ attempted assassination. Investigators believe the shooting was meticulously planned, with the shooter spending months preparing, including deploying a drone near the rally location hours before the shooting at Trump.
The FBI stated that the day before the shooting incident, Crooks also visited a local shooting range to practice using the gun he would use in the attack.
Crooks fired eight shots at a Butler, Pennsylvania rally on July 13th, with one bullet piercing Trump’s right ear. Former firefighter Corey Comperatore, aged 50, was fatally shot during the incident, while two male attendees aged 74 and 57 sustained serious injuries but have since been discharged from the hospital last week.
