In Rhode Island, USA, a World War II veteran who had to drop out of high school at a young age due to circumstances has finally received his high school diploma, thanks to the efforts of his granddaughter. At the age of 98, he was honored by a local high school with this significant achievement, which brought him immense pride.
On Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring those who have served the country, various tributes were paid to veterans across the United States, including 98-year-old Anthony Simeone from Cranston, a World War II veteran. Simeone, who served in the Battle of the Bulge during the war, was recognized by a local high school with a high school diploma on this special day.
Anthony Simeone, born in 1926, had dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to support his family. He later joined the U.S. Army at 18 and participated in the pivotal Battle of the Bulge during the Second World War.
Reflecting on his wartime experiences, Simeone shared, “The Battle of the Bulge was one of the deadliest battles for the Americans in World War II. It demonstrated that Hitler could be defeated. It was the final major offensive by the German forces on the Western Front.”
After the war, Simeone returned to the United States and pursued further education, eventually earning his General Educational Development (GED) certificate. However, he had always aspired to receive his high school diploma but had never been able to participate in a graduation ceremony.
In recognition of his contributions to the nation, Cranston High School East presented Simeone with his long-awaited high school diploma.
Simeone was overwhelmed by the unexpected honor. Surrounded by his loved ones, he graciously accepted the diploma, expressing his gratitude for this recognition.
He remarked, “I feel very honored.” This acknowledgment signifies the recognition of his dual identity as both a high school graduate and an American hero.
The emotional moment of receiving the diploma after decades of waiting was a touching tribute to Simeone’s dedication and sacrifice for his country.
