7.9 Magnitude Strong Earthquake Strikes Myanmar, Yunnan Residents Report Strong Tremors

On the afternoon of March 28th, a strong earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 struck Myanmar, causing tremors in many areas of Yunnan, China.

According to the official measurement by the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred at 14:20 in Myanmar (21.85 degrees north latitude, 95.95 degrees east longitude) with a depth of 30 kilometers.

Reports from CCTV indicated that around 14:50, the Emergency Management Bureau of Ruili City in Yunnan Province confirmed that due to the earthquake, there were damaged houses and injuries to individuals in the area.

Videos circulating on Douyin and Weibo showed the effects of the earthquake: the rooftop pool of Ruili Wealth Plaza in Yunnan turned into a waterfall, and buildings collapsed in a market. People were seen running in the streets to seek safety.

Furthermore, netizens reported strong tremors in places like Xishuangbanna, Dehong, Kunming, Lijiang, Baoshan, and Dali in Yunnan, with feedback of tremors in Guizhou and Guangxi as well.

Netizens expressed various reactions, such as, “As a Yunnan resident, my first reaction was dizziness, it took me thirty seconds to realize it was an earthquake.” “The tremors in Kunming were very noticeable!” “The earthquake in Tengchong scared me.” “The tremors in Dali were so obvious, sitting in the car, I thought someone was shaking it, only to realize even the trees were swaying.”

“In Kunming, everyone was shaken into a daze. I was in the bathroom, thought I was going to faint from staying up late and low blood sugar, but then I saw the coat hanger and mop swaying. This time the shaking lasted quite long. I remember the last time I felt such a strong tremor was during the Wenchuan earthquake.”

Some netizens questioned, “Why wasn’t there any earthquake warning issued?”
