Recently in Bijie, Guizhou, a 6-year-old girl accidentally triggered an explosion while picking up a hand grenade, resulting in her leg being injured by shrapnel and sparking concerns.
On March 2nd, a netizen posted a video claiming that their young niece had found a hand grenade from somewhere that morning, accidentally pulled the fuse, causing shrapnel to blast holes in the iron gate and injuring the girl’s thigh bone.
Surveillance footage circulating online showed that after the fuse was pulled, the grenade started emitting white smoke. Sensing the danger, the little girl dropped the grenade and ran towards the house, but just as she reached the door, the grenade exploded. With a deafening bang, the courtyard was engulfed in dust, and then the girl’s family rushed her out of the house to seek medical attention.
According to a report by the “Nanchang Evening News,” the girl’s uncle said, “She thought it was a firecracker about to explode, so she hurried back home. A few seconds later, the explosion happened, which was quite powerful, blowing seven or eight large holes in the iron gate, and knocking down even the mop placed by the door.”
Medical examination results showed that the girl’s left thigh bone was hit by shrapnel.
The incident quickly gained attention online, with netizens questioning where the hand grenade came from and how the little girl found it. Some expressed concerns over the appearance of a hand grenade among the public, deeming it unacceptable.
Some speculated about the possibility of “illegal possession of firearms” and urged for a thorough investigation into the source to prevent such dangerous items from falling into the wrong hands.
Others suggested that it could be a leftover weapon from wartime, reminiscing about past experiences involving the discovery of military explosives and emphasizing the importance of handling such dangerous items cautiously.
Comments such as “Thank goodness she knew to run, or else it could have been tragic” and “She picked up a life” reflected the shock and relief felt by many in response to the incident.
In response to public concerns, local government officials stated that the explosive material “may not necessarily be a hand grenade” and could potentially be remnants of fireworks or firecrackers. Currently, the police are investigating the matter.
