In 2025, earthquakes have been occurring frequently in mainland China, especially in Sichuan province. On April 26th at 12:21 pm, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake struck Baoxing County, Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan. The epicenter was at a depth of 10 kilometers. Nanjing and Suzhou in Jiangsu, as well as Hebei, also felt the tremors.
According to the official determination by the China Earthquake Networks Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 30.87 degrees north latitude and 98.95 degrees east longitude. Villages within 5 kilometers of the epicenter include Mengba and Dayixi, while towns within 20 kilometers include Gaiyu Town.
The epicenter was 40 kilometers from Baoxing County, 65 kilometers from Gongga County in Tibet, 98 kilometers from Batang County, 99 kilometers from Jiangda County in Tibet, 110 kilometers from Dege County, 173 kilometers from Chamdo City in Tibet, and 491 kilometers from Chengdu City.
At the time of the earthquake, Baoxing County experienced strong tremors. According to posts from netizens, “Nanjing felt the earthquake distinctly,” “Suzhou felt it for real,” and “Hebei also felt it.” A 3.0 magnitude aftershock occurred at 12:39 pm following the main earthquake.
After the earthquake, the Sichuan Earthquake Administration initiated a level 4 emergency response, conducting inspections on water conservancy, hydropower projects, and rural water supply facilities. Currently, Baoxing County has not received any reports of casualties.
The earthquake has caused concern among netizens. Many expressed worries, saying, “Earthquakes happening every few days,” “Recent earthquakes seem to be occurring more frequently, hope nothing serious happens,” “Heard the land ox roaring at night, and indeed it was an earthquake,” and “Approaching May 12 (anniversary of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake).”
