On June 15th at 6:37 AM, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Gong County, Yibin City, Sichuan Province, with a depth of 10 kilometers. According to official reports, the earthquake resulted in 2 injuries and damage to some buildings.
Video footage circulated online showed bricks falling off buildings and vehicles being damaged in the area. Cracks appeared on the walls of residents’ homes, with items scattered all over the floor. In the video, a woman expressed, “This earthquake is so severe, oh my goodness.”
According to reports from mainland media, when the earthquake occurred, residents of Gong County felt strong tremors, causing the flower pots in Ms. Wu’s home to shatter. At that time, Ms. Wu, who was sitting at the doorstep, quickly got up to protect her head and fled the yard.
Ms. Wu mentioned that she felt like the whole building was shaking. Although she, as a Sichuan native, has become accustomed to earthquakes, her first instinct was to run because of the loud and long-lasting tremors, which she hadn’t experienced in a while.
Further information obtained at 6:30 AM on the 16th from the earthquake relief coordination office in Gong County revealed that some towns have reported building damages and two people have sustained minor injuries. However, communication, electricity, water, gas supply, and transportation in the affected areas are functioning normally.
