Despite the Chinese Communist Party’s claims that Taiwan is an integral part of its territory, mainland China has never occupied Taiwan since its establishment in October 1949. Chinese forces have been sending military aircraft and ships to provoke Taiwan almost daily this year, employing various grey zone tactics to maintain tension in the Taiwan Strait region.

President of the Republic of China, Lai Ching-te, mentioned during the 2025 “Halifax (HFX) Taipei Forum” on the 20th, “Taiwan is strategically located in the first island chain, facing direct threats from authoritarianism. We are fearless and resolute in safeguarding national sovereignty, upholding our democratic and free way of life, and defending peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. Taiwan holds peaceful ideals but does not harbor illusions about peace. We will uphold the spirit of ‘peace through strength,’ building a stronger Taiwan through concrete actions and strengthening the camp of democracy and freedom.”
