In response to the increasingly advanced electromagnetic detection technology and air defense systems in the future, the US military initiated the development of the next generation stealth bomber in the early 21st century. In 2015, Northrop Grumman, the designer and producer of the B-2, defeated Boeing and Lockheed Martin to win the engineering and manufacturing contract for the new generation bomber of the US Air Force.
On December 2, 2022, the US military officially unveiled the sixth-generation stealth bomber B-21 Raider, considered to be a milestone in the development of the new generation bomber for the US Air Force. On November 10, 2023, the B-21 Raider successfully took its maiden flight at the United States Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California.
The B-21 is developed based on the B-2 stealth bomber, incorporating a large amount of mature technology from the B-2, with ample redundant space on board for future upgrades and improvements. The key upgrades of the B-21 include stealth coatings, engines, flight control systems, electronic equipment, and overall structural manufacturing technology, with some crucial components featuring new stealth designs.
As a sixth-generation fighter, the B-21 not only boasts improved stealth capabilities but also possesses powerful artificial intelligence, network capabilities, the ability to cooperate with unmanned aircraft in combat, and an open architecture for easy technological upgrades.
Just two months after its maiden flight, the US Department of Defense approved the start of initial production of the B-21, entering the low-rate initial production phase, which came as a surprise to many. The Pentagon stated that the B-21 Raider is designed for mass production, with the first B-21 already in an advanced stage, largely representing a production aircraft rather than a traditional prototype. The goal of the B-21 program is to accelerate the aircraft’s development and testing while reducing costs.
